Hintergrund

Background

Reaching the top had been heavy labor for the team of Hagen: In 2003 the main sponsor filed for bankruptcy and the team of then „Brandt Hagen“ was dismissed. The coffers were empty and the fans disappointed. Basketball in Hagen clearly was in a crisis and that in a city that had been playing a major role in German basketball all the way since the league was established in 1966. The city still takes great pride in winning the German championship in 1974 and the German Cup in 1975 and 1994.

Making it into the first league again however seems to be just the beginning of yet another drama for Phoenix Hagen. They do not have a sporting arena for the required 3000 spectators necessary for a first league team. Since playing in a local circus is not permitted by the ‘Bundesliga’ officials Hagen starts to turn an old indoor tennis court in the industrial area into their home center. Shortly before Hagen’s first league season begins their „new“ location is officially approved.

In this cobbled up basketball court the players are now starting to fight for staying in the league. O a low budget coach Ingo Freyer and his assistant coach Steven Wriedt have to build up a team capable of surviving in the ‘Bundesliga’. From the start of the season it is also clear that the current place is merely a temporary solution and that the former basketball arena has to be enlarged to hold 3200 seats. But then the question is: Will Hagen be able to remain in the first league at all?
